A Typical Day

Children thrive on predictability, rhythms and routine. While no day is exactly the same - ever - we have a tailored day plan for each class to cover all their physical, cognitive, social-emotional and playing needs. Normal Starfish Lane Kids opening hours are from 7am to 2pm. Extended hours from 6:30am - 4pm.

Early Birds

Starfish children are welcome to begin their day as early as they wish after 6:30am. They may come in and have breakfast to energy up or jump straight in to the action. The children are free to explore and decide which pre-set activity they would like to do or choose a carpet toy or sensory table to explore in as they wait for class friends to arrive.

Getting Started:

Typically, our children go back into the class and wash up. Then they gather for circle time, they learn to greet their friends in class, sing interactive and playful and action songs, do the calendar and weather. The teacher will talk about the topic they are learning about and share information with the children and tell them about their day’s activities. Children then take their name off the board and choose an activity. Then they are free to move around in the classroom.

Healthy Eating:

Our Kids in the Kitchen program also takes place once a week in the morning in which children prepare a recipe in the class. They learn to eat healthy in a fun way. They measure, stir, roll and knead all sorts of yummy creations and once they are cooked, they get to enjoy their hard work. Our nutritionist team select a new recipe each week.

Chillax Time:

Depending on their age and individual needs, may have nap at any time throughout the day in our dedicated, darkened and quiet sleeping rooms with comfy beds and cots.

Lunch Bunch:

Lunch times vary for classrooms but all children sit down and eat together. The children learn self-help skills and making decisions about what to eat from their lunch box and which favourite food first. To encourage independence, we allow them to open their own bags and put away their containers when they are finished. They can reach for their water bottle anytime throughout the day.

Play & Explore:

Throughout the classroom, the children learn by playing and exploring. All the toys in the classroom have a purpose, threading to develop fine motors skills, sorting by color, size and shape, and in quantities, they can build towers and knock it over using gross motor skills. They can read a book in the classroom or get imaginative and pretend to be anything they want in the dress-up corner or role play areas which we change every week.

Outside Action:

In the cooler months, classes will go outside and play in the sunshine and fresh air with a variety of bikes and cars, sand pit, slides or choose to read a book, build a giant lego tower or chase bubbles. Let it Grow! In the cooler months, the children will go outside again in the afternoon and water their plants that they grew in the fall, pull out weeds, harvest any tomatoes / carrots.

Playball:

During the morning, they will have a Playball lesson which is a sports movement program, it helps to develop children’s gross motor skills, ball skills, balance and mobility. They also learn to work as a team and individually, take turns, listen and follow instructions, and build on previous skills.

Yes to Yoga:

Every week in the afternoon the children practice a yoga move. This is done outside or in the Starfish Cove. They love to practice and follow the yoga instructors lead, bend little bodies, stretch and twist.

See you tomorrow! Children grab their little bags as they are collected by parents and say goodbye. Parents can get feedback on the daily activities of their children but also later, in their individual learning portfolio that is updated weekly.

Normal days end at 2pm. A late pick up is after 2pm and before or at 4pm.

At each Starfish Lane Kids nursery, we use this huge space for children to do Playball, Zumba, play active games, free play, run, cycle and climb. Classes rotate so there is enough running space for your children to get their heart-rates up and generate lovely rosy cheeks!

Australian Curriculum

Proudly Australian, our approach is based on the highly acclaimed Early Years Learning Framework: Belonging, Being & Becoming as developed by the Australian Government. Starfish Lane provides a holistic approach, with an emergent curriculum that provides our children with a range of learning opportunities for individual and shared experiences. Thus we ensure that all our children experience learning that is engaging in a safe and supportive environment that builds life skills and school readiness.

  • Belonging is the basis for living a fulfilling life. Children feel they belong because of the relationships they have with their family, community, culture and place
  • Being is about living here and now. Childhood is a special time in life and children need time to just ‘be’—time to play, try new things and have fun.
  • Becoming is about the learning and development that young children experience. Children start to form their sense of identity from an early age, which shapes the type of adult they will become.

This enables teachers to deliver a high quality play-based program designed around your child’s interests and needs. The framework outlines the principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance your child’s learning experiences. We ensure that all our children experience learning that is engaging in a safe and supportive environment that builds life skills.

Our children at Starfish Lane Kids consistently achieve a high level of success in passing entry assessments to the larger International schools in Doha and trust the same applies in Abu Dhabi as our little ones graduate.

History and Founder

How did Starfish Lane Kids begin?

Kimberley Sheedy is from Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia and is an expert in Early Years Education.

Recognising the need for quality child-care in Doha, she established the first Starfish Lane Kids nursery in 2006. Since then, Kimberley has created a little bit of Australia here in the Middle East: Starfish Lane Kids is a breath of fresh air, welcoming children with the scent of eucalyptus, an atmosphere of energy and creativity, and loads of fun. Starfish Lane Kids is now one of Qatar’s leading nursery environments for young children. Kimberley has expanded the wings of Starfish Lane Kids, operating 3 branches in Doha and their new branch across the sand dunes in Khalifa City A in Abu Dhabi.

A working mother with two children, Paris, 20yrs and Indigo, 12yrs, Kimberley understands the pressures facing young families as they seek the best environment and care for their children. As a business professional, Kimberley believes in continued professional development for the entire Starfish Lane Kids team as the benefits naturally transfer to the children in their care.

Kimberley has a great passion for volunteerism and service. She supports two young women from Ethiopia and these wonderful girls, Meaza and Mahalet, have now become a part of Kimberley’s family. Kimberley works to support fellow Australian and noted physician, Dr. Catherine Hamlin, and Dr. Hamlin’s Fistula Foundation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On May 25, 2016 Kimberley is presenting in Abu Dhabi to raise awareness and raise funds for the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital where obstetric fistulae are repaired free of charge. Click here for more info.

Within the Doha community, Kimberley served on the establishing committee of the Qatar Professional Women’s Network and has been a regular speaker for the “How Women Work” Conferences in Doha. The Starfish Lane Kids community, children, teachers and parents, support Breast Cancer Awareness, with funds raised from its annual "Splash of Pink” coffee morning in October going to various Cancer Societies.
